UPMC Presbyterian, a Magnet designated hospital, is currently hiring a Casual Registered Nurse to support the 6D Neurosurgery Unit. Join a collaborative team dedicated to delivering life-changing care to patients with complex spinal and neurological needs.

Position Overview

6D Neurosurgery is an 18-bed unit specializing in postoperative care for spinal surgery and craniotomy patients, with overflow stroke admissions. The unit promotes a supportive, team-oriented environment focused on collaboration and knowledge sharing. Caring for a diverse medical-surgical population makes 6D an excellent setting for nurses seeking to broaden their experience, while working alongside world-renowned neurosurgeons dedicated to innovative care and optimal patient recovery.

Schedule & Casual Requirements

RNs work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays, to support 24/7 patient care. Candidates will be placed into one of the following casual titles based on experience and availability:

  • Professional Staff Nurse – Limited Casual: 30 shifts per calendar year
  • Professional Staff Nurse – Casual: Minimum of 36 hours in three pay periods, one holiday per year, and 24 off-shift/weekend/standby hours per quarter

Title and pay are determined by education, experience, and hours commitment with a starting rate of $37.30 per hour.

  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience required. BSN preferred.
  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately with the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment and handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
  • Critical thinking skills are necessary to exercise and to lead others in the application of the nursing process.
  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity.
  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • UPMC-approved national certification preferred.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) either in the state where the facility is located or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement with the state where the facility is located.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
